Video from our South African Holiday ...

My name is Lizel, born in Vanderbijlpark (South Africa) in 1977. My home country, the place where my heart will always be no matter where in the world I live. There are so many South Africans living abroad these days that I wanted to write a book that will take you back in time, make you feel homesick, but also something to share with the world so that other cultures and people can share my recipes, thoughts and guides and maybe make a trip over to see what they have been missing all these years!

I have 1 brother and 1 sister that both went to the same primary and high school in Vereeniging with me. My further studies were in Vanderbijlpark where I completed my B Com Degree in HR Management. In 1999 I went on to complete a B Com Honours Degree in Industrial Psychology at the Potchefstroom University. After being a lecturer at a College in Alberton for 2 years, I decided to go off and see the world.

Living in the same house for the first 24 years of my life, this was going to be a great change for me. In 2002 I set off for England, wanting to save up enough money to travel, to see the rest of Europe. After about 4 months in the country, I met the man I would marry 2 years later.

I always wondered why I wanted to travel so far, but I knew in my heart what the answer was. To meet my soul mate. This was just confirmed the day we stood in front of the reverend getting married. We got married in South Africa, on the banks of the Vaal River. Having my mother walk down the isle with me, holding my husband’s hand, seeing the great smile on his face was amazing. The greatest day of my life.

Living in UK has its challenges. All you can do when you are homesick is think of the lovely people, friends and family you left behind. But the way to cheer yourself up is firstly, get a GREAT big hug from your husband, then phone them, speak to them and of COURSE bake something that will remind you of home.

That was my main aim with my book. Giving every South African (and the world :) the chance to have this book filled with “memories”. The other reason for writing this book is to share with the rest of the world our great traditions. Letting others experience the same great recipes that we have had the privilege to experience all of our lives.

Baking doesn’t just cheer me up, but also my lovely husband. Enjoy my book and please feel free to contact me via my Blog..
