Johannesburg International
This is South Africa’s busiest airport, located in Kempton Park, just outside of Johannesburg. If you are around there in the daytime, you have to go and see Bruma Lake Flea Market between 09.30 and 17.00, located across from the Eastgate shopping centre.
Very close to the city centre of Johannesburg is Gold Reef City. This is a combination of a great theme park and a living museum of how life used to be during the gold mining era in the 1890’s. The whole idea of Gold Reef City, centres around shaft number 14 that was first used in 1887. You can find out a lot of history by walking around, popping into different little shops.
Soweto should also be seen by all visitors. Make sure that you go with a tour group. They will know where to take you and tell you about the history.
Pretoria did not develop as fast as Johannesburg. It is a great city that consists out of more than 100 parks, bird sanctuaries and nature reserves. The most common association when you hear Pretoria, is it’s great purple Jakaranda’s. This is why Pretoria is also known as the Jakarandastad (city). Church square is the centre of the city and dates back from the 1850’s when the Afrikaner Voortrekkers arrived.
Also see the Union building, build in golden stone. The Voortrekker Monument is another monument worth visiting. It is a national icon for all Afrikaans South Africans. The monument was built in such a way that the sun shines through the opening only on the 16th of December. The words “ons vir jou Zuid Afrika” (us for you, South Africa) is inscribed on this monument. Paul Kruger’s house is very close to Church Square and you can visit the house he lived in between 1885 – 1900.
