Introduction to South Africa

South Africa has a rainbow nation. It has a great and colourful history and was built up by people from all over the world. The San lived in South Africa as far back as 10 000 years, the Khoikhoi and Xhosas (just to name 2) joined them and the Portuguese arrived, circling the Cape in 1487. Jan van Riebeeck (the Dutch) arrived in 1652 and came to dominate the sea lines. Belgians, Scandinavians, Germans and the French all joined over time and enjoyed a comfortable, peaceful life. They all became South Africans, speaking a language mixture between Dutch and Afrikaans.

Slaves were imported from Guinea, Angola, Madagascar and Malaysia to name a few. They brought with them their great spices and knowledge of food and recipes like bobotie is thanks to them. In 1795 the British troops arrived in the Cape and took over control. They brought with them a new lifestyle and a new language.

Many wars followed including the first and second Boer war, as well as the war of Bloodriver. Many difficult years followed for all South Africans, but with great results. Afrikaans was accepted as a second official language, South Africa became a Republic on 31 May 1961 and apartheid became something of the past with the first democratic election in 1994 with Nelson Mandela becoming president. Our history is very colourful and South Africa is a country worth fighting for.
